So as usual I just recieved an email saying Devon Suskauer commented on your post. Of course this is on last weeks post so i’m sitting here like, “Shit, now I have to go post something.” I honestly am just not motivated to write one an contemplating if the zero is worth it or not. But as usual i’m gonna write this anyway. So this weekend is my fraternity’s formal. I kind of want to start by just asking why sororities have their formals on campus? Now I know The Panhellenic Council mandates that they have to have it on campus, but even if that is the case just find a way around it! Panhel can’t stop you from going to the beach. Just have a bunch of sisters go to the beach with guys, I don’t see the problem. Now I’m sure Morgan will tell me something about how ZTA won’t subsidize because it’s against Panhel rules, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is stupid. If I wanted to get dressed up in a tux and walk around campus…than i’ll get dressed in a tux and walk around campus. I just don’t understand how anyone could be motivated to spend that much time to walk to The Carolina Inn. I’d rather just chill in my room, play some fifa and drink….kool aid. Fraternities do it the right way. Now my roommate is in Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi) and they went to Virginia Beach this weekend. I would take Virginia Beach over Franklin Hotel any day. My fraternity is going to Ocean Isle Beach. Now not to toot my own horn, I’m psyched! So I am heading down there on thursday night with my best friend and our girlfriends. I mean come on, I don’t understand why you would go to a hotel all dressed up over spending three nights, on a beach, with free beverages (for teh girls at least), and then on Saturday night you can STILL get dressed up in the unnecesarily fancy outfits and go out to a restaurant and enjoy yourself. Then you all come back to th sweet quadplex we have on the beach and enjoy some more delicious and refreshing beverages. It is a win-win situation here. Everything that the sororities do, the fraternities do. BUT, we do it better. So thats pretty much it, now im trying to reach my word max. Okay finished.

Well I had a larger dose of the Duke Blue Devils this weekend than I wanted. It started on Thursday night. I wenht to Duke with four other people because KiD CuDi and N*E*R*D were playing and my friend bought tickets so we could all go. So we get there around 6, but the concert starts at 8:30. So I call one of my close high school friends who goes to Duke. We meet up and eat a place called The Loop on campus (which just made me realize that UNC’s campus food blows big time. I’m legitimately envious of any person who can get delicious onion rings as a side to their fresh white meat BBQ chicken sandwich, but I digress). So after we eat, we walk through the quad and just sorta explore campus. The first thing I noticed was that every person was walking around with a coozie that had a bud light or some otehr quality beer. This got me thinking, why do UNC cops suck so much? I mean who wouldnt wanna enjoy a refreshing coors light on the way to English 102? I guarantee that our insight into William Blake’s “The Rose” would be stunning if we all had a few beers while we waited for the class before ours to get out. The next thing I see on campus is a table outside the dining hall where there are about 8 people sitting. These people are eating their food and on the table are 2 cases sof Keystone, and 5 bottles of various wines. So not only do these kids get to crack some beers on the way to class, but they are able to get shwasty during lunch. So now I’m just wondering “Why the hell didn’t I go to Duke?!” But before you all post about how i’m a traitor, let me finish. Carolina has so many things better than Duke. To start, there werent girls laying out in the quad in bikinis in between their classes. That aside, Carolina girls are much better than Duke girls…hands down. The last thing is that Duke guys are pompous as hell. After the concert I was hanging in the Pi Kappa Phi Section of the dorms (my friend is a Pi Kap), and a drunk guy was trying to argue like international politics as he fell over himself. So besides the air of arrogance, the whole no Greek housing policy is retarded. I’d vote to throw down at my frat house any day of the week than drink wine in a dorm.

Well I just got back from my weekly chapter meeting. Fraternity chapter serves a number of purposes, but as an emerging chapter we have been spending a lot of time in changing our constitution and charter to adhere to the growing size of our colony. We spent two hours debating proposal and constitutional amendments. Chapter ended and I was glad all this sh…stuff was finished with. After chapter, however, I find out that the much talked about health care bill will be decided upon tonight. So as I begin editing my personal statement I have CSPAN on in the background where more debating is going on. My friend explained that the Democrats are the ones that people are worried about. A bit confused by this, he explains that Obama has compromised part of his bill to give health care physicians more of an option in terms of the abortion clause. This has appealed to a number of Republicans so they signed on with it. However, this has turned off Democrats to the bill. So it’s really interesting to see how a rather liberal bill is losing some popularity among the leftist individuals of our government. It also allows for some interesting deductions to be made. The fact that we (and yes i’m including myself in the democratic ’genre’, but I don’t consider myself one. I’m actually ridiculously torn by this. The economist in me is screaming no, because it is going to tax the businesses that are already struggling in our economy. But at the same time, my altruistic side is thinking that people need healthcare and people are going to have even more trouble participating in the workforce if they are sick. So there is a tradeoff in both options and i’m having difficulty weighing them) are able to get conservatives to sign on simply by tweaking the abortion clause, means that most rightist are raising problem with the morals of certain areas, and not so must the logistics of it. Now, i’m listening to the debate and there seem to be two main arguments forand against. Almost every Democrat has come up and they all say the same thing, “This is a very personal issue…” then they go on to give very touchy feely explanations. Then Republicans come up and begin explaining how our economy will spiral downward even further if we pass it. Personally, I feel that the Republicans are the ones giving legitimate arguments, but that does not mean I agree.

So I’m sitting on my couch and my friend’s girlfriend decides to put on HBO because she wants to watch Pineapple Express. Now I’ve seen this movie before and it’s a decent movie, but i’ve never really listened to what they said. Within twenty minutes of watching this movie, I realized that the only way you can truly enjoy this movie is if you are smoking the same drug that the movie is criticizing. The premise, for those of you who have not seen it, is that there is a drug war occurring between “the Chinese” and one man (Ted something). Just drawing off the first movement in plot, there is an entire war between the entire Asian weed cartel and Ted. How Ted was able to create a drug stockpile large enough to rival the entire Chinese weed cartel is beyond me. Now after Seth Rogen finds out that Ted saw him witness the execution of a Chinese drug lord, Ted sends his hit men to go kill Seth Rogen and James Franco. They both figure out that the only connection between James Franco (Seth’s drug dealer) is a DIFFERENT drug dealer, some guy named Red. James Franco and Seth Rogen beat up Red. Now the fight scene that occurs is one of the most ridiculous ones I have ever seen. It’s literally impossible to describe the entire fight scene, but there are a couple of scenes that recap the absurd fight scene. It starts off with Red throwing a granite ashtray at Seth Rogen’s head. It hits him square in the face and then Seth decides that the best thing to do is run to the bathroom and hide. Somehow, Seth leaves the bathroom and then Red goes in. James Franco and Seth Rogen then break the door down and in the process of breaking the door down; slam Red’s head into a porcelain sink. The fact that neither Red nor Seth Rogen was knocked unconscious by either the ashtray or the sink is beyond me. The rest of the movie goes downhill from here. The hitmen end up shooting Red in the stomach twice, however he manages to live for at least 24 hours and then goes on to help Seth Rogen and James Franco break into Ted’s drug stockpile. Two men, both high out of their minds, manage to kill off the people guarding the warehouse. In the end, this movie satirizing the use of marijuana. It is just making fun of the common stereotypes people put on marijuana use. If you go into this movie expecting a legitimate story plot and actual humor, you will be disappointed.

As much as I am enjoying my spring break, there is nothing I love more than writing blog posts at one in the morning. The question pertaining to why I’m even sober enough to write this is one that will be saved for another time. I wanted to use this blog post to bring up a topic that I know most of you have already bought brought up. The topic of universal health care reform is a very prevalent one in our expanding liberal government. I am not using “liberal” as a derogatory term, it’s simply an adjective. The question that Obama has forced us to ask ourselves, and others, is whether or not we want universal health care. It was a controversial topic in his campaign, a key part of his State of the Union, and now an even bigger topic with the death of late Senator Ed Kennedy. Many people like to look at healthcare from the personal and rather small-minded point of view. People like to think of the story of Suzie Q and how she is the mother of four kids who just got laid off due to the economy and now can’t afford to take care of herself or her kids. It seems like this is the premise of almost every pro-healthcare campaign in America (and yes Devon, I mean the United States of America). However, these are extremely short minded and kind of contradictory in principal. The reason for most people losing their health insurance is the loss of their job. They most likely lost their job because of the crappy economy. However, people want to now use the situation of our economy as a selling point for instituting a policy that will affect our economy in such a negative way, we would most likely sink into a depression larger than the movie 2012. Besides the obvious economic burdens that come with simply putting this policy into place, there is an aspect that goes unnoticed to most people. There is a part of medicine that everyone with the initials M.D. next to their name hates, ad this is malpractice. I’m not going to explain malpractice, but the thing that people don’t realize is that if a doctor is sued for malpractice and the patient wins, or government is going to b paying them the money they were just awarded, not the doctors. So think about the big fiscal picture the next time you are proposed with a question about healthcare.

So for those of you who have seen more than one of my blog posts it becomes evident that a lot of my posts are political and have to do with public policy. Now this isn’t because I have a sick obsession with policy and thats all I like to write about; it’s because in my Policy 101 class, we post comments on the Blackboard Discussion Board on different policies. Me, being the thinking man that I am, look at it as a way of killing two birds with one stone. So last week my teacher sent out a link to a New York Times article. The link is: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/02/us/02unemploy.html and talks about how Congress is bein faced with the question of movin the period of time people can recieve unemplyment benefits. We were all asked for our opinion on the article, and here is what I posted: “It is rather impossible to throw out a definitive number as to “how many weeks” we should give unemployment benefits. Any amount of time is going to be arbitrary, much like the drinking and smoking age. It is simply a guess as to how long people will need money until they can find a job. However, the unemployment rate has steadily dropped from over 11% to 9.3% as January 2010. With the unemployment rate dropping and consumer confidence on the rise (according to the WSJ), it is fair to say that extending unemployment benefits is going to hurt our economy more than help. People feel the need to actively pursue a job when there is no source of income. If the US government continues to provide citizens with money it isn’t going to do anything except entrench bureaucracy further into the lives of citizens and expand the government’s control over our society. If we keep the benefit length where it currently is, once people are unemployed for a period longer than that they will be forced to find jobs. However, I personally believe that congress shouldnt have extended benefits, rather put that money towards creating more jobs. If they did that, the Treasury wouldn’t have a constant draining of funds to the public, people would more actively pursue jobs, and the economy would be properly stimulated to help us recover from this recession.” I’m not really sure if me reposting comments that I posted in a different class is teechnically breaking the rules or just simply exploiting a loophole. I look at it as exploiting a loop hole (but thats just me). But in the end most of my opinions have a strong libertarian and fiscally conservative undertone, and I do this to try and spark that classroom controversie Ms. Rispoli mentioned in the beginning of the year. Well now im just trying to reach my wor limit…and I have. See you monday.

Well it’s time for another wonderful blog post. This is what really brightens up my Sunday afternoon. In another futile attempt to spark classroom controversy, this post is going to be about federal reparations that are paid to the families of soldiers who have die in Iraq or Afghanistan. I had my policy midterm on Thusday and we had to analyze the policy of givving $500,000 to the families of dead soldiers from both a fiscal and ethical standpoint. Before I go into that I just wanted to give a basic outline as to what this policy is. If a loved one is serving in our armed forces and participating in an active war (yes that is vague, but it’s not my policy) and they are killed in action, the family will be payed a sum total of $500,000. If we are to look at this question from strictly an ethical standpoint, then no, the government should not provide $500,000 dollars if a loved one dies in Iraq or Afghanistan. I say this because most families will be heard saying, “My son’s/daughter’s life was priceless.” This is what almost every family will believe. However, if the government goes ahead and gives them the $500,000 anyway, then they are essentially saying that we, the US government, can put a price on your son/daughter’s life. This will do nothing except paint the US military as a machine that looks at people not for who they are but for what they are worth. If this is the image our military gains, it will definitely dwindle. However, the flip side of this argumet has to do with the practical monetary viewpoint. When this soldier was alive, he was a functioning member of society. If he were to serve his time in the services and then be discharged, he would almost definitely join the work force. All of these efforts would lead to a stable income that he can use to provide for his family. However, since this soldier is no longer alive his/her family lost a significant source of income for the coming years. So the US government is not putting a price on the soldiers “life” per se, they are making an educated evaluation of the monetary gains he/she would make and then providing the families with the appropriate funds. If the government didn’t do this, we would have families that are hit with such a ridiculous exgenous shock that is so diffiicult to adapt to, they would most likely file for bankruptcy and a terrible cycle would begin.

Seeing as how our blogs are supposed to spark controversy and classroom violence, I figured it would be appropriate to express my opinions on gays in the military. Barry Goldwater said, “You don’t have to be straight to serve in the armed forces. You just have to shoot straight.” There are a number of points that are both for and against allowing gays in the military. My opinion is to allow them into the military. This is true for a number of reasons. The first is that we are currently fighting two wars, and to discharge people based of their sexuality is causing us to lose the battle. The February 2010 edition of The Economist reports, “More than 13,500 service members have been discharged under the policy, including much-needed Arabic and Farsi translators.” When we have discharged this many people from active service, especially personnel that serve a vital role in our exit strategy from Iraq, it’s clearly not a good idea. Second, is the fact that we label ourselves as a democratic nation, one that is supposed to be a beacon of tolerance. However, we are following a policy that discriminates against people that are of a certain sexuality? It is hypocritical for our nation to label itself a democratic republic when we do this. My third and final point is that we must look to what the general population wants. Seeing as how bills and amendments are debated and decided on by people that were elected to represent the people, we should look to what the people truly want. The same February 2010 edition of The Economist reports that the Gallup Poll stated that 69% of Americans say that openly gay people should be allowed to serve. When the people who decide on this policy are already being shown that close to 70% of the population think that gays should be accepted into the military, it becomes clear what the decision “should” be. Now I will acknowledge the opposing points on this topic Some people state that gays should not be allowed into the military because the straight members will be put into situations that decrease their ability to perform. However, this entire argument is based off of a false stereotype. For this argument to be true, every single gay would not only have to openly claim his sexuality, but also make sexual advances on his/her platoon members. Anyone who claims this to be true, is quite simply ignorant.

I read an article in The Wall Street Journal that was discussing a new cancer drug. The name of this drug is Erubitrux. Erubitrux is a drug that terminally ill cancer patients receive. This drug has been clinically tested and the maximum amount of time that a patient gains from buying this $80,000 drug is a month and a half. I was talking with some of my friends from Public Policy 101 and we ended up getting into a debate about whether or not a public policy that pays for this drug would be cost effective.

A few of my friends felt that the money should not go towards paying for this drug. They felt that the money should be spent on finding a cure for this terrible disease. My opinion is that we would need to select policy goals that are feasible. Finding a cure for cancer isn’t something that is going to happen in the foreseeable future. The government should not be spending their money on Erubitrux, but rather on different preventive measures. The Wall Street Journal article had an interesting chart that was explaining the different effects that smoking has on cancer. It showed that smoking causes 90% of lung cancers. It also causes a number of other types of going to be thinking that to say that is so immoral and unethical. The problem is that policy decisions aren’t supposed to be made from an emotional stand point. If we were elected to better uphold the people and spend taxpayer dollars, our decision shouldn’t be subjective and biased, it needs to be objective. So from an objective stand point, the money that is being spent on cancer drugs that prolong a patient’s life for only a month, society as a whole isn’t receiving anything. However, the Wall Street Journal article makes an interesting statement saying that for all the money spent on preventative measures, the US economy gains twice that amount. Therefore, I say Erubitrux is not what our dollars should be going towards, it would be towards preventing cancer.cancer, including kidney and bladder. The government should not be putting the money towards drugs that are going to prolong people’s lives by as little as a month or as long as a year. We need to realize that society isn’t going to be gaining anything by prolonging a cancer patients life by a month. Now when you first her this you’re going to be thinking that to say that is so immoral and unethical. However, the CQ article makes an interesting statement saying that for all the money spent on preventative measures, the US economy gains twice that amount. Therefore, I say Erubitrux is not what our dollars should be going towards, it would be towards preventing cancer.

There are so many things one could post on a blog site. I was originally going to post about a youtube video I just saw. Its a rap parody regarding keynesian economics and its opposing ideals. Then I remembered that there are very few people in this world that actually want to read 400 words about economic ideals and models. I decided to post this blog about this thing that southerners have just been introduced to called “snow.” This is apparently something they have never heard of before. I’m not quite sure why the city of Chapel Hill and UNC have decided to freak out over this…but they have.

I’m from Long Island, New York. In new york it snows quite a bit, so to see 4-5 inches of snow isn’t that big of a deal. We would just throw on a snow jacket, wear some shoes with traction and be on your way. This morning I walked out of my dorm and saw people wearing pajama pants, 7 layers and Sperry Dock Shoes. To wake up to a sight like this was not only surprising but amusing. As I walked to Rams Head with some people to go get food, there were signs on the Rec Center explaining the new hours because of the “looming Snow Storm.” Last night I went to Bski’s for dinner after I finished studying in Davis. After my friend and I finished our delicious Skis, we headed to the P2P stop. Across the streets there was a line out the door of frantic students stocking up on supplies in fear of being snowed in by the ridiculous 4 inch snow storm. All across the UNC website there were constant up dates of new “snowstorm hours” for some of the different student facilities. I was inside the student store getting something to drink when I overheard some people talking with the cashiers. I assume the guy talking to them was a friend, or an overly confident northerner. He was just simply asking why they were closing half the campus when the most snow Chapel Hill could get is 6 inches. The only thing she said was that people in the south freak out about snow.

Now I don’t blame or criticize southerners for the way they handle snow. I understand that it is something that happens on a very rare occasion, but when you have grown up around snow, it is a funny thing to watch. I did, however, promise a friend of mine that I would make a point of saying that North Carolinians don’t like paying the tax dollars for snow equipment like plows. And while I do agree with him about that, it doesn’t change the fact that half the school basically shut down as soon as they heard the word “snow.”
